One of the Best Places to Live in Colorado

Fourmile Canyon Boulder Mountain Home

2167 Fourmile Canyon Drive, Boulder 80302

A mountain home built into the side of a hill at dusk

We spoke with the sellers of our listing up Fourmile Canyon. They gave us the inside scoop on this home that is one of the best places to live in Colorado. Keep scrolling to learn more about the home and why it is one of the best places to live!

This idyllic mountain home sits on 6.35 acres bordering Betasso Preserve, but it is only 8 minutes to Boulder! Listen to the tranquil sounds of Fourmile Creek and take in panoramic views of Green Mountain, Poorman Mountain, and Betasso Preserve. The home has a gourmet kitchen with high-end stainless steel appliances, extensive storage, and a walk-in pantry. The home also has soaring ceilings and large windows to let in that mountain light and scenery. A new large deck lets you enjoy mountain living even more. Acreage offers private creek access, private hiking and biking to Betasso.

The owners love many things about this home, including that it “directly borders the 1,151 acre Betasso Preserve and has direct private walking access to the park and its large hiking/bike/horse trail system.”  They also enjoy how is it “located in close proximity to numerous trailheads and other recreational areas such as the Boulder Creek Path, Bald Mountain, Mt. Sanitas, Chapman Drive, Switzerland Trail, Lions Lair, Sugarloaf Mountain, and Gold Hill.”

The home has several perks that not all mountain homes have. It is located directly on Fourmile Canyon Drive, which receives priority plowing and sanding during snow events, as it is a school and regular bus route. It is also located near the Poorman Fire station, which allows for fast emergency response.

And, in terms of emergencies, the current owner is a volunteer firefighter. He has ensured that the entire lot has been fire mitigated over the past several years. Dead branches and other potential fuel on the forest floor have been removed and replaced with non-combustible decorative materials. Trees in close proximity to the home have been removed or trimmed.

The area immediately around the home is tiered and provides large flat areas for recreation and  multiple garden beds that have been great for growing flowers and vegetables. Pumpkins have thrived here! The main yard has large retaining walls made with natural stone harvested from the property.  A stairway and path system encircle the house providing easy access to the whole home.

The home is secluded yet with wonderful neighbors and a strong sense of community, say the owners. “The home is located in a secluded area and has a large lot size with only two neighboring houses that are well away from the house, ensuring a high level of privacy and solitude.” The “minimal light pollution (makes) for wonderful star gazing.” And, the primary neighbors of the home are the assorted wildlife, like “squirrels, foxes, deer, bears, moose, and the infrequent mountain lion.”

The owners talk extensively about the property. “The lower section of the lot is primarily flat and is easily accessible providing an array of recreational activities including hiking, fishing, and camping.”  The lower section also has about 750 feet of the creek “that at its highest flow, measures over 20 feet in width.” The creek includes multiple wading pools, a natural 4-foot waterfall, an island, and multiple channels at its highest flow. It is home to trout and acts as a watering hole for numerous species of wildlife in the area.

We love that the historic Switzerland Trail Railroad once passed through the property. Evidence of it can still be seen in the lower portion of the lot– the rail bed remains in place.

Although the owners talked extensively about the outside space of the home, the inside is gorgeous too. Some interior photos of this gorgeous home are below.
