About the Home

Thomas tell us how he came to build 4189 57th Street, “We owned the adjacent large home to the south of 4165 57th from 2004 to 2017 and loved the mountain views. As an Environmental Engineering Licensed Professional Engineer, I decided to build a near-net-zero-energy large home at 4189 57th to prove that there is no upper limit on the size of a near-net-zero-energy home.”

Thomas goes on to explain that, “There are basically 5 zones with 5,500 sf finished plus a 3,000 sf unfinished basement with a walkout to the lower patio and upper redwood deck: West Wing Main Floor, West Wing Upper Loft, East Wing, Large Foyer connecting West Wing and East Wing, Lower 3,000 sf basement for storage.” The home also has 2 whole house vacuum systems, 2 complete kitchens, 2 washing machines, and 2 clothes dryers. Thomas enjoys how this can help save time.

The home is a fabulous entertainment home says Thomas, “Large enough for friends and business associates to stay over for a few days in their own private East Wing.”

There are concrete driveways to all 5 entrances and parking lots for numerous vehicles. Rough-ins are in place to add a sauna and hot tub of your choice. The home has all brand new electric service, natural gas service, 2 inch water lines, surface water management system. There are numerous mature trees already and several flowering crab apple, maple, and emerald green arborvitae evergreens, which are becoming mature as well.

Additional Features

Energy Efficiency

The energy features of the home are unique and desirable. Thomas explains that the home, “is a geothermal home that lowers HVAC system energy requirements by 75%, and it is fulfilling as a human being knowing that we only use about 25% of typical heating and air conditioning energy and are doing our part for the environment.” Per the seller, additional green features are, “Triple-Pane windows, closed cell foam insulation, LED lighting, energy recovery ventilation, whole house fan, reverse osmosis water system…”

“Electric Car recharging circuitry is in place. The electrical circuitry up to the roof is in place for future PV solar, which is NOT really necessary at all. It would be better to just add remote controlled thermal shades downstream to automatically close at night on cool winter nights and on hot summer days if one wanted to further lower energy consumption,” Thomas explains more of the green features.

Windows

“We built 4189 57th with 5 separate entrances and with about 50 large  Triple-Pane windows to maximize the perfect mountain views, to eliminate all outside noises, to eliminate all condensation on special knotty alder wood window frames, and to provide optimal thermal insulation, comfort, and energy efficiency,” says Thomas. And he explains how the windows, “also all open inward for cleaning from the inside. These windows give the feeling of living outside in nature and provide a constant reminder of how unique living in the magical Boulder Foothills area really is.”

Peaceful Living

The home offers incredible peace says Thomas, “With our 690 foot perimeter decorative stone wall, there is a quiet and peaceful privacy and there are no adjacent homes with windows that view into 4189 57th. It is a unique facility just a couple minutes from all that Boulder has to offer but outside of the traffic and congestion of the city. The country setting is rejuvenating.”

Nearby Things to Do

“There are trails a few hundred feet to the west between Jay Road and Independence which go down to the glider portion of Boulder Airport and other trails just to the northwest at Boulder Reservoir,” says Thomas.

“We love to walk and ride bikes on these trails and in the Woodbourne Hollow area on 57th Street just north of Independence. We love to watch the gliders in the morning with the Flatiron Mountains in the background and open space in the foreground,” he elaborates.

For shopping, two grocery stores are near — the Safeway on north 28th Street and Iris and the King Soopers to the northeast on 63rd Street.

For dining out, Thomas “like(s) the haddock fish dinner at Murphy’s restaurant just north of Safeway and Café Blue next to King Soopers and also several restaurants in historic Niwot…the Niwot Tavern is just one of many with great food, like the Cod-Father.”

“Also in Niwot, My Mom’s Pies is a great place to buy home-made pies to bring back home for guests,” Thomas shares, and “Exotic coffee shops are in all 3 close-by areas mentioned above and they all offer special home-made desserts.”

In terms of local events, Thomas tells us how, “The nearby Greek Orthodox Church has an annual festival that the whole neighborhood gets invited to free which includes traditional Greek folk musicians, traditional dances, traditional costumes, and human fun without any religious promotions.”

Finally, Thomas wants to point out that, “It should be noted that our history in the neighborhood was for several years at the adjacent property, but the final finished  home has never really been lived in at all and is BRAND NEW for those who buy it, after we spent a full year monitoring everything, fine tuning everything, and proving the performance of all the systems.”
